WalkCompass: Smartphones sense your walking direction, regardless of the phone's orientation.

Rotating the Phone

The user changes the orientation of the phone after every few steps. WalkCompass' estimated direction (green cone) changes accordingly to show the actual walking direction.

The smartphone compass (gray cone) is shown for reference.

Walking in Square

Here the screenshot of the application is shown separately. Observe that WalkCompass (green cone) points to the direction of walk. It corrects itself within a few steps after a turn.

The smartphone compass (gray cone) is shown for reference.

180° Turn

The user takes a 180° turn without changing the relative orientation of the smartphone. WalkCompass (green cone) keeps pointing to the direction of walk.

The smartphone compass (gray cone) is shown for reference.

Walking Backward

WalkCompass (green cone) detects the actual heading even when the user walks backward.
